70% recharge in 2 Minutes!

Category : blogen

batteryScientists have developed a new battery that can be recharged up to 70% in 2 minutes and has a lifespan of over 20 years, reports Science Daily.

The battery was developed by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) and is expected to impact many industries, especially electric vehicles which suffer from long recharge times of over 4 hours and limited lifespan.

The battery will let electric vehicles charge 20 times faster than currently possible. Also, the battery can endure more than 10,000 charging cycles. That’s 20 times more than the 500 cycles typical of today’s batteries.

The researchers say they’ll have the new technology on the market in just two years. While we’ve certainly seen fast-charging battery promises in the past, the simple fact that this new battery uses so much existing technology is reason to believe that they’re right about that timeline, too.

Apple Has Reportedly Begun Production of the iWatch in Small Quantities

Category : blogen

Apple-iWatch-conceptApple has reportedly begun production of the iWatch in small quantities, according to supply chain sources cited by the China Times.

Additionally, it’s reported that the iWatch will be built using SiPs (System-in-Package modules) rather than PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards), meaning that the iWatch’s processor, memory, storage, and other components will likely be wrapped up into a single package.

Kinsus Interconnect Technology Corp, NanyaPCB and ASE Group (a.k.a. Advanced Semiconductor) are said to be the ones responsible for the production of the SiP modules.

Supply chain sources are expecting shipments of 2.5 to 3 million units in Q2. Production is said to ramp up to 14-15 million units for Q3.

A recent report from KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo has Apple producing the iWatch in 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch sizes to accommodate different sized wrists. Both are said to utilize flexible AMOLED displays with sapphire glass covers for scratch protection. The device will reportedly integrate numerous biometric sensors, a NFC chip, and have a slim, light, ‘fashionable appearance’.

Square Launches Pickup, Register Offline, and Inventory Tracking

Category : blogen

swipeToday Square announced three new features for sellers: Square Pickup, Offline Mode, and Inventory Tracking.

Square pickup
The new pickup feature on Square Market integrates with Square Register so sellers can fulfill customer orders in-person and online. Now sellers can run their rush hours efficiently and provide a better customer experience. The pickup feature is available to all sellers at a competitive 8% processing fee per order with an introductory offer at 2.75% through July 1, 2014. Consistent with all of Square’s tools, access and setup are free, and sellers receive payment the next business day.

Sellers in San Francisco and New York, from large, well-known establishments to local coffee shops and cafes, are already using pickup.

● In San Francisco, Souvla links to Square Market from their homepage and offer customers a great pickup experience. “We opened Souvla only three weeks ago and Square’s pickup has been an invaluable addition to our business. Countless regulars already order from our website on their phone or desktop. They can skip the line and have their order ready when they walk in the door,” said Charles Bililies from Souvla.
● In February, Uniqlo offered Square’s pickup tool to customers looking to pre-order Valentine’s Day gifts and pick them up in store.
● Customers at Bay Area Whole Foods Market stores pre-order sandwiches with Square’s pickup tool.

Offline Mode
Offline Mode enables sellers to use Square’s mobile register, including accepting credit card payments, when temporarily without Internet connection. Square processes payments swiped offline when a connection is reestablished, keeping a consistent experience for the buyer and seller.

● Activewear company FlipBelt needed a way to take credit card payments at marathon expos and other fitness events with no connectivity. “Most systems I looked at that could take payments offline were just credit card terminals—they didn’t have the full point-of-sale functionality that Square Register does. One company that had what I needed quoted me nearly $20,000 for the system—it’s amazing that Square offers Offline Mode in a free app,” said Vice President of Operations Erik Jeffries.

Inventory tracking
As one of Square’s most requested features, inventory tracking gives sellers a free way to track their item stock when selling in person and online. Sellers manage their inventory in their web dashboard, including setting up stock alerts so they are never caught off guard by low inventory.

Apple’s Maiden Data Center, North Carolina

Category : blogen

20110518datacenterappleApple granted NBC a brief look inside its Maiden, North Carolina data center for a news segment entitled, ‘A New Kind of Apple Farm’.

Apple is moving to shrink its carbon footprint, building the nation’s largest privately owned solar farm to run its data center, NBC chief environmental correspondent Anne Thompson reports.

The Maiden facility has earned the LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council — the first data center of its size to be honoured. On any given day, between 60 and 100 percent of the renewable energy it uses is generated onsite through biogas fuel cells and two 20‑megawatt solar arrays — the nation’s largest privately owned renewable energy installation — and Apple purchases any remaining power they need from entirely clean sources.

The Maiden data center generates 167 million kilowatt‑hours of renewable energy onsite per year — enough to power the equivalent of 13,837 homes.
